Precision Labeling of Syringe Barrels – An Intrex Project for Radiometer

Radiometer approached us because they needed a device capable of precisely labeling syringe barrels used for blood sample collection. After a thorough analysis of the URS (User Requirement Specification) document, containing detailed requirements and expectations regarding the process and the device, we designed the Intrex SEL 3991 PLUS labeling system, which applies labels with very high precision and verifies data accuracy using a Cognex vision system.

Radiometer is a manufacturing company in the medical industry whose products have built brand desirability worldwide. Advanced blood analyzers for blood gas, electrolyte, and metabolite testing help support decisions that save patients’ health and lives.

Challenges facing the team:

  • Precise labeling of blood collection syringe barrels
  • Compliance with the customer’s strict URS specification
  • Need for full control over label application accuracy and precision
  • Eliminating the risk of an incorrectly labeled product reaching the market

Solution: Automation and full control over the labeling process

Using a vibratory feeder, syringe bodies are placed on a roller conveyor, and then a high-performance Intrex 200+ labeling head applies the label to the product. In the next step, an advanced Cognex vision system checks for the presence of the pharmacode and, most importantly, the correctness and precision of label application, which was a key requirement for the customer. Any defective product is identified and rejected at the reject station.

Once production is completed, the device generates a production report with a full range of information on good and defective products, rejection causes, and performance statistics. The entire process is managed from a single location using Intrex Smart Panel software, providing full control over every stage carried out by the equipment.

Implementation results

  • Automation of the labeling process
  • Increased production line efficiency
  • Reduced operator involvement — allowing reassignment to other tasks
  • Eliminated risk of mislabeled products reaching the market
  • Reduced number of rejects
