Domino K600i Printers at Becton Dickinson – Printing Unique Codes on Packaging for the AstraZeneca Vaccine

The launch of the AstraZeneca vaccine is undoubtedly a major boost in the fight against the global COVID-19 pandemic. Efforts continue worldwide to vaccinate populations as quickly as possible, which will help slow down and ultimately stop the spread of the virus. The vaccine, developed by the University of Oxford and the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, is already being distributed on a large scale across Europe.

Becton Dickinson, as one of the largest manufacturers of medical products, was selected by the UK government as a supplier of special Flu+ syringes, used to administer the vaccine to patients. They are manufactured at the Becton Dickinson – Fraga plant in the province of Huesca, Spain. Domino Amjet Iberica is the marking solutions provider for Becton Dickinson in Spain.

Challenges facing the team:

  • Time-consuming changeovers of printing machines
  • Frequent downtime caused by consumable replacement
  • Insufficient working speed for very high-throughput packaging lines
  • Frequent print quality issues on syringe and needle packaging
  • The need to maintain reliability and speed without compromising quality

Solution: Domino K600i digital printing

One of the most recent projects involved implementing Domino K600i digital ink-jet printing technology to print high-quality data on syringe and needle packaging used for COVID-19 vaccines.

The implementation and integration of the Domino K600i digital printing system into packaging machines at the Becton Dickinson plant was an ambitious decision that opened up new possibilities. The medical device manufacturer needed equipment that would solve its biggest printing challenges while maintaining the very high throughput of the syringe and needle packaging machines.

The Domino K600i is a reliable digital printing solution utilizing proven 6th generation ink-jet technology, resulting in over 1,000 installations worldwide.

“We are proud that Becton Dickinson chose the Domino K600i digital printing solution to integrate with its packaging machines. The implementation met their very high quality requirements, drastically reducing the number of rejects with no impact on operating speed. It also significantly reduced printing-related costs.” — Manuel Hernandez, Business Manager for Digital Printing Technology at Domino Iberica

Implementation results

  • Drastic reduction in the number of rejects
  • No impact on the operating speed of the packaging machines
  • Significant reduction in printing-related costs
  • Reliability proven in over 1000 installations worldwide
